Eye Bags – What exactly are they?
Periorbital puffiness, also known as puffy eyes or eye bags, is the mild swelling or puffiness that forms on the tissues (called the orbits) under your eyes. Oftentimes, eye bags are blamed on a lack of sleep or stress, however, puffy eyes can show up for various reasons. As we age, the tissues surrounding your eyes weaken. What then happens is that the fats that support the eyes will move to the lower eyelids and causes the puffy appearance of the eyes. Some fluid buildup can also occur, which adds to the swelling.
The possible causes of eye bags or puffy eyes include:
- Ageing – As we grow older, the collagen production of our body slows down, causing wrinkles, looser skin and eye bags.
- Sleep deprivation – If you’re not getting enough sleep or have an irregular sleep cycle, it can disrupt the internal body clock and increase fluid buildup and swelling.
- Fluid retention – Caused by pregnancy and some medical conditions, fluid retention causes fluid to build up around the lower eyelid area.
- High sodium diet – Increased consumption of salty food triggers fluid retention and leads to the buildup of eye bags.
- Allergies – The subcutaneous capillary beds under the skin around your eyes may leak due to allergic reactions. This can cause swelling and create puffy eyes.
- Alcohol and Tobacco use – Consumption of alcohol and tobacco may lead to fatigue and stress, which in turn leads to fluid retention.
- Genetics – Studies have shown that eye bags can run in families, indicating an increased chance of developing them when relatives also have them.
It’s a good thing to know that eye bags are often a cosmetic problem and are rarely a cause for concern for more serious conditions. So, don’t panic if you get really puffy eye bags, it shouldn’t be anything serious and there are various things you can do to deal with it if it bothers you too much.
Getting rid of your eyebags
Eye bags are very common and are a universal problem, especially in today’s age where almost everyone is part of the workforce. They can sometimes show up unexpectedly and can ruin an otherwise productive day at the office. It is important to be informed on the different ways we can address this problem.
1. Determine the cause of your eye bags.
Before anything else, it’s important to find out what the root cause of your eye bags is. Don’t just haphazardly try out a random solution and hope it works. Different causes call for different solutions.
Most of the time when it comes to eye bags, fatigue and a lack of sleep are the main culprits. A change in lifestyle should help to correct this, such as sleeping early and managing our time better. 2. Get enough sleep regularly
At least 6 hours of sleep is needed for your body to feel well-rested when you wake up. It is also important to have a regular sleep cycle, as sleeping at different times will confuse your body and trigger fluid retention.
Start by making a schedule and sticking to it as much as you can for at least 3 weeks. This will allow you to develop a habit of sleeping regularly. Also, avoid distractions such as your phone when you go to bed. Patience and diligence are key, and hopefully, this can help get rid of your eye bags.
3. Start a diet that’s low in sodium and high collagen
High consumption of salty food encourages fluid retention, which can allow fluids to settle on your lower eyelids and cause puffy eyes. You don’t have to cut salty food out entirely, but it is important to reduce. You can still eat your favourite delicious salty food, just in smaller amounts compared to before. This move not only helps in getting rid of eye bags but can also affect your overall health as too much salt may cause problems to your kidneys and other organs.
You can also start adding some food that boosts collagen production such as fish and vegetables to your daily diet. Collagen is the main structural protein in the body and is responsible for keeping our skin tight and firm. As we age, the body’s collagen production naturally slows down, which also increases the chance that eye bags develop.
4. Drink enough water
Keeping yourself properly hydrated at all times will prevent your body from getting thirsty and feel tired. This would also stop your body from storing up water and developing a fluid buildup. Summers in Singapore can get really hot, so make sure to bring a bottle of water with you always!
5. Applying eye cream
Relax and take care of your eyes by applying some eye cream diligently every time you feel discomfort. It hydrates the area surrounding your eyes and would help prevent swelling to occur on the lower eyelids. Add eye cream to your everyday skincare routine and watch as your eyes feel a lot less tired than before!
6. Always wear UV protection especially for your eyes
Don’t go out under the sun without first making sure that you have proper sun protection! Always make sure to apply sunscreen to protect your eyes from UV rays which can accelerate ageing and can help prevent your eye bags from getting worse. Another thing you can do is to always wear sunglasses when you go outside.
7. Put a wet spoon or frozen tea bags over your eyes
It sounds weird but applying a cold temperature over your eyes helps relax your eyes and reduce the appearance of eye bags. This is because the coolness induces vasoconstriction, which reduces the size of the blood vessels under your eyes and reducing the swelling of your eye bags. There are also special reusable eye masks that you can cool on your fridge and wear over your eyes when you sleep.
8. Manage your allergies
Allergies can cause eye bags to appear and managing them by avoiding your allergens can help. Also, make sure to always have your anti-allergy medicine on hand in case your allergies get triggered.
9. Adjust your sleeping position and keep your head raised
Fluid can accumulate on your lower eyelids because of gravity, which can explain your puffy eyes. Add an extra pillow behind your head when you sleep and try to sleep on your back instead of on your side or stomach.
10. Avoid drinking alcohol as much as possible
Drinking beer and other booze can cause dehydration and would make you feel discomfort when you sleep. If you must drink though, such as in social gatherings and parties, remember to drink at least one glass of water before you go to bed. Alcohol also weakens the area around your eyes, which can make it more likely to develop into eye bags.
11. Quit smoking
Eye bags are probably the least of your concerns if you’re a heavy smoker but add that to the list of things you can get rid of once you kick the habit. Smoking dries and weakens the skin on your face, which lead to eye bags. Maybe right now is the time for you to finally quit smoking.
12. If you’re in a pinch, use a concealer to hide your eye bags
A lot of these tips I gave you require an amount of patience, diligence and time from you. However, there are urgent situations such as a party or business meeting where a quick fix solution is needed. Thankfully, you can hide your eye bags underneath a concealer so that you don’t look tired or fatigued for that very important photo shoot or interview. Choose one that matches your skin tone and just lightly pat it on your eye bags – no need to rub it in. Make sure you always have one in your kit before you go!
